Rising Indian shuttler Tanvi Sharma moved into the final of the girls’ singles event at the BWF Junior World Championships on Saturday with her incredible win over Liu Si Ya.
The 16 year old Sharma got the better of her Chinese counterpart in straight games with a 15-11, 15-9 triumph in the semifinals of the event.
Sharma is slated to square up against Thailand’s Anyapat Phichitpreechasak in Finals with the top spot up for grabs.
Sharma, who got the beter of Japan’s Saki Matsumoto on Friday in the quarterfinal of the event to guaranteed India a medal at the tournament with a thrilling comeback win. She became the first Indian to secure a BWF World Junior Championships medal in 17 years with her triumph.
The last Indian female player to win a world junior medal was Saina Nehwal, who clinched the gold medal in the 2008 edition held in Pune.
Saina, who also secured a silver medal in 2006, along with Aparna Popat (1996 silver), are the only other Indian female players to have reached the podium in the history of the competition.
The 16-year-old Tanvi, who finished runner-up at the US Open Super 300 earlier this year, overcame a shaky start to defeat the left-handed Matsumoto 13-15, 15-9, 15-10 in a tense quarterfinal that showcased her grit and tactical maturity.
Tanvi began strongly, racing to a 10-6 lead in the opening game, but a series of unforced errors — including two costly net shots and a misjudged baseline call — allowed Matsumoto to snatch the opener 15-13.
The Indian regrouped impressively in the second game, tightening her control with sharp placements and aggressive play to level the match.
In the decider, Matsumoto surged ahead 7-3, but Tanvi mounted a spirited comeback, turning the tables at 11-9 and closing out the match with a flurry of precise winners to secure her semifinal berth — and India’s first medal of the tournament.
