Taraon Mishmi language writing workshop organised

Tezu: Forum of Library volunteers, in collaboration with Bamboos Library, recently organised a workshop at Tezu in Arunachal Pradesh’s Lohit district, aimed at enhancing skills in the Taraon (Tawra) Mishmi language writing system.Senior volunteer Sakelu Chikro welcomed the participants and commended their enthusiasm to learn and preserve their mother tongue. The session started with an engaging interaction, ‘Why save our mother tongue?’ by Taraon Development Committee member and resource person Ajitso Ama.Ama explained that while the Kaman sub-tribe of the Mishmi community traces its origins to Burma (Myanmar), the Taraon sub-tribe hails from the Tibet region.

He emphasised that the Taraon language exhibits regional variations in accent, all of which are valid and can be documented. He provided detailed insights into the writing system, including the correct pronunciation of vowels and consonants. Through practical demonstrations, participants learned how to accurately pronounce and write these sounds.Volunteer Sedanso Yun said the daylong workshop was fruitful, but suggested that a longer format would better equip participants to read and write the Taraon language effectively.

The workshop ended with a collective commitment to preserve, promote, and practice the Taraon Mishmi language through its writing system.According to the 2001 Census, there are over 8,500 Taraon language speakers in Arunachal Pradesh.
