The 181st birth anniversary of M. Venkatakrishnaiah, known as the ‘Grand Old Man of Mysore’ and Tathayya, was celebrated and his legacy and contribution in various fields were remembered, here on Friday.
The event was organised by the alumni association of the Tathayya Orphanage by garlanding his statue near the city bus stand. MLA for Krishnaraja T.S. Srivatsa highlighted the contribution of Venkatakrishnaiah in promoting education and ushering social reforms.
Other speakers who paid tribute to Venkatakrishnaiah, pointed out that he was a pioneer in the field of journalism as he edited a slew of magazines and wrote extensively to shape public opinion on national issues in the runup to the freedom struggle against British empire.
Calling for according greater recognition to his legacy, speakers urged the government to celebrate the birth anniversary of Tathayya officially and institute an award in his memory.
