A 13-year-old student of the Government Higher Primary School at Shedtikere in Sagar taluk was severely beat up by a teacher, forcing the Block Education Officer of the taluk to file a report recommending disciplinary action against him.

Pramod Sonnakki, a trained graduate teacher (TGT), working at the school, allegedly subjected the student to corporal punishment on Wednesday. The boy was beat up with a cane, leaving bruises all over his limbs and back. According to the parents, the boy developed a fever following the incident, and the doctor advised them not to send him to school for a couple of days, as he had been disturbed by the incident. Reportedly, that the boy attracted the anger of the teacher for taking out a ball from the sports room without the knowledge of the teacher.

Sadananda Swamy C., Block Education Officer of Sagar taluk, told The Hindu that he learnt about the incident on Thursday and sent a report to the Deputy Director of Public Instruction, recommending disciplinary action against the teacher. “We would have issued a notice and sought explanation from the teacher if it was a minor incident. But it is a serious issue. I have recommended disciplinary action against him. Action will be taken against him," the officer stated.
