CHENNAI: A 19-year-old man and his female friend died after their motorcycle collided with a stray cow near Padappai on Sunday night. The moment they fell off their two-wheeler, a speeding car ran over them.
The two died on the spot.The deceased have been identified as Naveen, of Annanagar near Padappai, and Abimani, 21, of Erukkur near Sirkazhi. The two were friends working at the same company in SIPCOT, Oragadam, in Kancheepuram district. Abimani was on a three-day leave and had travelled to her hometown Sirkazhi. She returned to Kilambakkam bus terminus by bus on Sunday night. Naveen arrived at the terminus on his two-wheeler, picked her up to drop her off at her residence in Oragadam via Padappai.Around 11pm, when they were near the Padappai overbridge, the cow suddenly ran onto the road and collided with the two-wheeler, causing it to topple. When Naveen and Abimani fell on the road, a speeding car going from Kancheepuram towards Vandalur struck them. The rider was wearing a helmet, police said.
Other motorists who witnessed the accident informed police. The Guduvancherry traffic investigation police rushed to the spot and sent the bodies to the Chromepet Govt Hospital for postmortem examination. The car involved in the accident has been impounded. Further investigations are on.Two days ago, Jayaraman, 35, of Kancheepuram, died in a road accident near Singaperumal Koil after his motorcycle hit stray cattle that suddenly crossed the highway. The animal also died on the spot.
