The Telangana Human Rights Commission has taken up investigation in the adulterated toddy case in Kukatpally that claimed at least 10 lives and left several others hospitalised. The Commission directed the Principal Secretary to the Government, Revenue (Prohibition & Excise) department, to submit a detailed report by August 20.
Citing grave human rights concerns, the Commission has called for a comprehensive report on three key aspects: factual verification of the incident, including the number of deaths and affected persons; action taken by the Excise department such as arrests or departmental inquiries; and preventive mechanisms in place to regulate toddy tapping and distribution across Telangana. The Commission also asked whether any compensation was provided to the victims.
According to preliminary findings and media reports reviewed by the Commission, victims suffered symptoms such as diarrhoea, low blood pressure and dizziness, with several admitted to hospitals in critical condition.
Failure to comply with the directive may lead to further action by the Commission. The matter is scheduled to be heard again at 11 a.m. on August 20.
