Tesla CEO Elon Musk has issued a blunt warning to European leaders and people following a report that predicts a massive population collapse across the region. Responding to data showed in a report by The Guardian, that the European Union’s population could shrink by 53 million people by the end of the century, Musk posted a four-word reminder on social media.“Children are the future,” Musk said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Why Musk sent warning to Europe
The warning comes on the heels of new projections released by Eurostat on April 16, 2026. The data paints a picture of Europe’s demographic future, forecasting that the current population of 451.8 million will plummet to roughly 398.9 million by the year 2100.The scale of this decline is worrying. The report says that the drop of 53 million people is roughly equal to the entire combined populations of Spain and Ireland disappearing from the map.
While the population is expected to grow slightly over the next three years, it will hit a peak in 2029 before beginning a steady, six-decade-long slide, the report added. It also claimed that in 2024, the fertility rate across the EU fell to 1.3 children per woman, the lowest since records began in 2001.
‘More Octogenarians, fewer kids’
The report highlights a shift in the age of European citizens. By 2100, the EU is on track to have a significantly older population, creating immense pressure on healthcare and pension systems.
“One in six people in the EU will be in their 80s or older by 2100,” the report noted, a sharp increase from the current ratio of one in 17.Experts like Anna Rotkirch from the Population Research Institute in Finland warn that “ultra-low fertility” (anything below 1.3) is becoming the “new normal.” She suggests that while immigration is often seen as a solution, the overall trend points to this being the “century of population decline.”
Why Elon Musk is sounding the alarm
Elon Musk has long been a vocal critic of declining birth rates, often calling “population collapse” a greater threat to civilisation than global warming. His four-word reply reinforces his belief that a larger, younger population is essential for innovation and the survival of human consciousness.
