Tests find E coli in Agasaim, Goa Velha water samples

Panaji: An analysis of water samples collected from a few spots in Agasaim and Goa Velha has shown high levels of fecal coliform and E coli. The analysis was spurred by complaints of improper discharge of hazardous chemicals and sewage. The tests were carried out by Goa State Pollution Control Board after the toxic waste dumped in some water bodies started flowing into fields and streams in both villages after heavy pre-monsoon rain since June 20 and the monsoon’s arrival later. While the polluted water bodies in Goa Velha were located at different places, those in Agasaim are connected to the tidal flow from the Zuari river nearby. The villagers complained that pollution on such a large scale had occurred for the first time.

St Andre MLA Viresh Borkar petitioned authorities to study the waste discharge.“Local residents have raised concerns about public health, environmental hygiene and potential damage to agricultural fields,” his memorandum stated. The farmers in Agasaim had halted their farming activities, as the water in the fields had turned black and emitted a stench.
