With the support of various parishes, the Thamarassery diocese has launched a source-level waste treatment promotion campaign as part of its innovative programmes to mark its ruby jubilee celebrations.

The month-long campaign aims to promote the proper segregation of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste at the source, using green and red bins that have already been distributed to various parishes.

“Managing waste in a way that does not harm the environment must become a part of our daily lives. Segregating biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste and processing them properly should evolve into a cultural practice. We must also discourage littering in public and support the State government’s efforts to eliminate plastic waste,” said Bishop Remigiose Inchananiyil in a communication issued on Friday (May 30).

He also urged parishioners to adopt effective home-level waste management and to set up compost pits or biogas plants for processing biodegradable waste.

To mark World Environment Day on June 5, the diocese has also decided to distribute and plant saplings. On June 1, all parishes will plant a sapling under the name “Jubilee Tree” as a symbolic gesture of their commitment to protect and conserve nature.
