In a disturbing instance of language vigilantism, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and former MP Rajan Vichare has landed in controversy after a video surfaced showing traders being beaten and coerced into apologizing for not speaking Marathi.

The incident took place in Thane, where Vichare had reportedly summoned a group of non-local traders to his office. In the video, the traders are seen being reprimanded by Vichare and his supporters, with repeated instructions to communicate only in Marathi. Some of the traders were allegedly slapped by Vichare’s aides and made to touch feet as a form of apology.

According to reports, the confrontation stems from a recent altercation at Thane railway station. A Marathi-speaking youth was allegedly abused and assaulted by non-local individuals during an argument over language. The victim later approached Vichare to register a complaint.

In response, Vichare reportedly called the accused traders to his office and allegedly directed his supporters to physically assault them. The video, now widely circulated, shows Vichare making one of the traders sit on the ground while verbal abuse and physical intimidation continue.

This comes on the heels of a similar controversy involving Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers targeting shopkeepers and service providers in Mumbai and Thane for not using Marathi in signage or customer interactions.
