The elected representatives of the Thanjavur Corporation Wards 30 and 31 stalled the vehicular traffic near the civic body headquarters on Thursday for about 30 minutes demanding solution to the problem faced by residents of their respective wards.

The councillors — Kesavan of AIADMK representing Ward 30 and Jai Satheesh of BJP of Ward 31 — said the underground sewage network laying project at Senbagavalli Nagar in Ward 31 was going on for the past two-and-a-half years. Drainage connections had been provided to the houses before completion of the project resulting in seepage of drainage on to the road frequently.

The issue was brought to the notice of the civic officials and as well as raised by Kesavan and Jai Satheesh several times at the monthly Council meetings. Recently, Mr. Kesavan attended the Council meeting held on June 5 by wearing black clothes to highlight the plight of the residents of Wards 30 and 31. Even after his symbolic protest, he said, the issue remained unattended by the officials.

On June 26, he and the BJP Councillor staged a road roko on the Gandhiji Salai in front of the main gate of the Thanjavur Corporation headquarters affecting the flow of vehicular traffic for about 30 minutes. They withdrew their agitation after the civic officials assured that the issue would be attended within a week.
