'The biggest challenge is staying honest to the sound, even when trend says otherwise'

Composers Rameez-Sohail, carrying the Sabri legacy, find profound meaning in film music, aiming to express unspoken emotions through sound. Their recent work, 'Sun Sada' from Nikita Roy, exemplifies this approach, using minimal instrumentation and Javed Ali's emotive vocals to capture the essence of loss.

Rooted in legacy, composers Rameez-Sohail trace their musical journey to a rich heritage. “We come from the Sabri legacy. Our grandfather, Ustaad Iqbal Afzal Sabri, and our father, Shabab Sabri, gave us a deep foundation in music.

It’s not just a profession, it’s our inheritance. We grew up living music,” he shares. Though they have worked across formats, films hold a special place. “For us, composing means shaping every form of sound, film music, albums, singles, even jingles. Cinema, though, gives you a rare chance to tell emotions without words. And that’s what drew us in, to make a scene feel, not just sound good.” Describing the inspiration behind ‘Sun Sada’ (from Nikita Roy, sung by Javed Ali, penned by Kaushik Vikas), Rameez recalls, “The song was born out of silence.

The film has a moment where a sister loses her brother, it stayed with us. We didn’t want to add music, we just wanted to feel what the character couldn’t say. The tune followed that silence.” On shaping the soundscape, he explains, “That moment of loss shaped everything. We kept it minimal, a melody that breathes, strings, space, and the vocal of Javed Ali, which doesn’t try to perform, just emote. The sound needed to reflect pain, not overpower it.”

At just 18 and 20, the young composers see their biggest challenge as staying true to art. “The biggest challenge will always be staying honest to the sound, even when the trend says otherwise,” he says. For him, collaboration is central to film music. “Collaboration builds the soul of a song. Everyone brings something valuable. Listening to each other, even to opposite ideas, often makes the song stronger. It’s not about proving a point.

It’s about finding the best.”

For Rameez, Bollywood is both comfort and ambition. “Personally, it’s home. We’ve been in this space for decades through our family. Professionally, it’s where stories and sound meet, and we want to give our best to every single note that plays on that screen.” With Sun Sada, Rameez Sohail delivers a composition that is heartfelt, unhurried, and drenched in emotion, a song that’s likely to strike a chord with anyone who’s ever felt the weight of silence.
