The doctor reveals that the worst food for liver is high fructose corn syrup. “Research shows that high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is far worse and is strongly linked to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
Unlike glucose, fructose is more readily converted into fat in the liver, increasing the risk of liver damage,” he said, in a video shared on Instagram. ”HFCS is commonly found in processed foods like cookies, candies, cereals, soft drinks, and sauces. Though fructose is naturally found in fruits and vegetables, industrial fructose (sucrose and high fructose corn syrup) is harmful to the liver. Surprisingly, industrial fructose used in all kinds of beverages and processed foods. It is a driving force in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Fructose is first processed in the intestines, where it can affect the gut lining and the balance of gut bacteria. It leads to increased absorption of nutrients and fat-building substances that flow into the liver. High levels of fructose and its byproducts from gut bacteria (like acetate and butyrate) amp up the fat production in the liver, leading to fat buildup and liver damage. Excessive fructose also leads to inflammation.
