A joint operation conducted by the Government Railway Police (GRP) and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) led to the arrest of a drug smuggler at Ambala Cantt railway station, Haryana. The suspect, identified as Virendra Dangi, was found carrying 3 kilograms of opium, valued at approximately Rs 8 lakh.
The accused, a resident of Unta village in Chatra district, Jharkhand, was en route to Ludhiana, Punjab, where he intended to supply the drugs. However, authorities are now investigating why he disembarked at Ambala instead.
Suspicious Behaviour Leads To Seizure
While conducting routine checks at platform number one, GRP personnel noticed suspicious behaviour from a young man repeatedly glancing at his bag. Their concerns prompted a search, carried out under the supervision of the duty magistrate, which led to the recovery of a significant quantity of opium. The seized drugs are estimated to be worth Rs 8,12,500.
Sub-Inspector Narendra Prasad of the GRP stated that the suspect was immediately taken into custody. Upon questioning, the accused claimed that his intended destination was Jalandhar, adding further confusion regarding his sudden halt in Ambala.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have confirmed that a previous case was registered against the accused in Jalandhar earlier in 2024. He will be produced in court shortly, and further interrogation will be conducted during his remand period. Relevant documents relating to the suspect’s background and movements have been requested as part of the investigation.
The GRP is now exploring whether Ambala was a planned stop for another delivery or a diversion from his original route. Further developments are awaited.
