Kevin Durant’s exit from Phoenix isn’t about where he wants to go—it’s about who’s willing to pay the steep price. Even with elite numbers and a fat contract extension in hand, Durant’s future is out of his hands.

The Suns are calling the shots this time. They’re not rebuilding—they’re calculating. And no matter who’s on his wishlist, the decision will come down to cold, hard value.

Phoenix Suns ignore Kevin Durant’s wish list and focus on trade value instead

Phoenix Suns is on the hunt for a $280 million player. After a rough 36–46 season and a coaching shake-up, the Suns aren’t in rebuild mode—they’re just adjusting their strategy. Kevin Durant, a 15-time All-Star, put up impressive stats with an average of 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 1.2 blocks across 62 games.

However, Phoenix isn’t looking for emotional ties: they want significant value in return—similar to what they gave up to get him in 2023.Kevin Durant is eyeing the Miami Heat, San Antonio Spurs, and Houston Rockets. He’s said to be open to a two-year extension worth around $112-122 million with any of those teams. However, that doesn’t change Phoenix’s stance—they’ve received interest from several teams, like Minnesota and New York, and are only looking for the best trade offer.

The challenge lies in matching Durant's hefty $54.7 million salary while also adding some talent or picks to make the deal sweeter. Miami might offer Andrew Wiggins, Kel'el Ware, and a draft pick, but their recent playoff disappointment makes this less attractive. San Antonio has Victor Wembanyama and plenty of draft picks, but they're reluctant to let go of important young players or picks. Houston has a bunch of first-round picks from the Suns and a good relationship with Durant, but they aren't willing to trade away young stars like Alperen Şengün or Jalen Green.

Phoenix’s expectations are high. They’re seeking a return similar to what they sent in 2023—Mikal Bridges, Cam Johnson, Jae Crowder, four unprotected picks, and a swap. The asking price is steep. As one insider quipped, "Why would anyone dare trade for Durant if they know he doesn’t want to be there?"—but Phoenix is betting Durant will adjust once his new team offers a future contract. Also Read: Desmond Bane’s next NBA move is official and Orlando Magic fans will feel itKevin Durant is still one of the top players in the NBA—even at 36, he put up impressive 26–6–4–1 stats, close to Giannis Antetokounmpo's level. However, his age, huge salary, and contract expectations make acquiring him quite challenging. The Suns are firm: they’re looking for stars and picks, not just a nice resolution for Durant.
