Playback singer Shahzad Ali shares the demanding yet rewarding journey of breaking into Bollywood. He emphasizes the need for constant self-improvement, adaptability to shifting trends, and maintaining a classical foundation.
Breaking through as a playback singer in Bollywood is far from easy, says singer Shahzad Ali, who has lent his voice to multiple films and independent tracks over the years. For him, the journey has been both demanding and deeply rewarding. “It’s definitely challenging. There’s huge competition, and you have to prove yourself to music directors constantly,” he admits. “Sometimes you record a lot but only a few songs get released. Recognition also comes slowly because playback singers stay behind the scenes. But if you stay disciplined, keep learning, and keep showing up, opportunities do come.” With trends shifting rapidly, he believes adaptability is key—without losing one’s foundation. “I keep updating my style without losing my classical foundation,” he says. “I listen to new genres, collaborate with young composers, and practice daily. I also try to stay active with live shows and independent music so my voice stays connected with the audience.” Over the years, Shahzad Ali has sung a range of songs, carving a niche with both romantic and soulful tracks like Gam Diya, Sanson Ki Mala, Har Zulm, and Jadoo. His latest release is a qawwali titled Ishq Jalakar from the film Dhurandhar.
