The Thiruvananthapuram international airport has registered a record passenger movement in August with 4.19 lakh passengers.
This is the highest monthly passenger movement through the airport since it was taken over by the Adani Group in 2021. Among the passengers, 2.25 lakh were international passengers with the airport facilitating a record 1,404 air traffic movements of flights from 14 foreign cities.
Among the international cities, destinations like Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and Dubai contributed a greater number of passengers. With the rise in international passenger volume through the airport, the authorities will start more services in the upcoming winter schedule, said sources. The airport has recently received a Union government nod to set up a five-star luxury hotel in front of the international terminal at Chakka.
240 rooms
With the Union Ministry of Environment recommending the clearance, the airport authorities are hoping to set up a five-star hotel with an outlay of ₹136.31 crore in one year. Spread across 33,902 sq m and with a height of 23 m, the hotel will have 240 rooms and a convention centre featuring 660 seats, a restaurant, and a slew of modern amenities aimed at providing a world-class experience to the passengers.
The project had been delayed after the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) requested changes to the original design. Now with the decks being cleared for the project, an agency with a proven track record in hospitality will be entrusted with the task of managing the hotel, marking a major milestone in the airport’s city-side development project.
