'This Girl Cheated Me...': Insta Post Triggers Meta Alert, UP Cops Thwart Suicide Attempt

A 19-year-old youth in Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh was saved from a suicide attempt thanks to an alert from Meta. On July 3 at 1:01 am, the youth posted on Instagram expressing his intention to take his own life, citing betrayal and threats from his girlfriend.

He stated, “This girl loved me, played with my life and cheated me, after that she is threatening me, so I am going to hang myself today. The reason for my death is no one else but these two."

Meta quickly notified the Uttar Pradesh Police Headquarters, who pinpointed the youth’s location using his mobile number. The information was relayed to the Azamgarh district police, and a sub-inspector from Pawai police station arrived at the youth’s house within 15 minutes.

Upon arrival, they found the youth preparing a noose to hang himself from the fan. With the assistance of his family, the police managed to save him. The youth, a BSc (Agriculture) student, had been in a long-term relationship with the girl, who now wished to marry another man, reportedly a drug addict, leaving the youth devastated.

To date, police interventions based on Meta’s alerts have saved 1107 lives. Following the incident, the youth received counselling and was handed over to his family. The prompt actions of the Social Media Centre of UP Police and Meta’s cooperation succeeded in saving another life.
