The power tussle within Telangana’s ruling Congress took a sharp turn on Wednesday when police raided the Hyderabad residence of Environment Minister Konda Surekha in Jubilee Hills. The search was conducted for her former aide, N. Sumanth, who had been sacked just a day earlier following allegations of corruption.
Congress MP from Warangal Surekha is an influential OBC leader. And Sumanth faces allegations of trying to extort money – by waving a gun – from an official of Deccan Cements Pvt Ltd.
Upon arrival of the police, a special team that works directly under the Hyderabad Police Commissioner, Minister’s daughter, Konda Susmita, accused the Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s office of targeting Sumanth and her family by forcing Sumanth to state on record that her father, Konda Murali, had ordered the extortion.
“My mother and father are being targeted by the state government. My mother is a minister, and look how they’re treating us. We don’t understand what we’ve done wrong. There are murder attempts on us, and this is a murder attempt," she told reporters who gathered quickly.

During her confrontation with the police, she alleged that the party was targeting a minister from the backward classes, even as senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi campaigned in support of OBCs.
She also protested any attempt to take Sumanth into custody without a warrant.
Claiming that Sumanth was unfairly targeted on the orders of the Chief Minister’s Office, she hit back with counter-allegations against Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy and MLA Kadiyam Srihari, accusing them of conspiring against her. She also named the Chief Minister’s advisor, Vem Narender Reddy, in the matter.
She further claimed the Chief Minister himself was involved in the conspiracy.
According to her, another aide of the Chief Minister, Rohin Reddy, was at the meeting with Deccan Cements, and wanted to know why he has faced no action so far. Meanwhile, Rohin Reddy denied any link to Sumanth, NDTV reported.
As the stand-off continued, Surekha and Sumanth emerged from the house and drove away.
The feud reportedly began after Surekha, who also oversees the Department of Endowments, clashed with Srinivasa Reddy over a Rs 71 crore infrastructure contract in Medaram.
Surekha claimed that the contract was granted without her knowledge and accused Reddy, who oversees the Revenue and Housing departments, of meddling in her ministry’s affairs.
