The Indian women’s team signed off their Group A campaign with a 0–5 loss to defending champions China in Horsens, Denmark on Monday night, despite several closely contested matches.

Coming into the tie needing a win to keep their quarterfinal hopes alive, India showed resistance but couldn’t convert key moments.

PV Sindhu, a former world champion, led the charge in the opening singles against world No. 2 Wang Zhi Yi. Sindhu stayed in control for large parts of the decider and opened up an 18–12 lead in the third game. However, Wang responded with a decisive run of seven straight points before closing out the match 21–16, 19–21, 21–19.

India’s other singles players also had their moments but fell short. Isharani Baruah pushed Olympic champion Chen Yufei in the first game before losing 20–22, 13–21. Devika Sihag took the opening game against Xu Wen Jing but eventually went down 21–19, 17–21, 10–21.

In doubles, India fielded a scratch pairing of Tanisha Crasto and Kavipriya Selvam, who briefly raised hopes by taking the first game against Luo Xu Min and Zhang Shu Xian. The Chinese duo recovered to win 10–21, 21–12, 21–19.

The other doubles match saw Priya Konjengbam and Shruti Mishra lose to Liu Sheng Shu and Tan Ning in straight games.

India had earlier lost a tight 2–3 tie to hosts Denmark and bounced back with a 5–0 win over Ukraine. The defeat to China, however, ends their campaign at the group stage.
