At least three people died in 30 hours after they were stuck in a massive traffic jam on the Indore-Dewas highway that stretched nearly 8 km between Thursday and Friday, as the Indore administration sprang into action.

The traffic jam, which began on Thursday evening and lasted until Friday night, left over 4,000 vehicles stranded along the stretch, triggering chaos and sparking serious concerns over the city’s road and traffic management systems.

Preliminary information indicated that the traffic jam was primarily caused by ongoing highway construction work and severe water-logging due to heavy rainfall, according to a report by the Hindustan Times.

Traffic was diverted to a narrow service lane, which led to extreme congestion and a chaotic traffic snarl. The absence of alternate routes through nearby villages further worsened the traffic crisis.

The first victim of the traffic jam was identified as Sandeep Patel, 32, who suffered a heart attack on the way to the hospital.

According to his uncle, Sandeep had complained of chest pain and was being taken to the hospital, but the car was stranded in the traffic jam and his condition deteriorated. He was declared brought dead to the hospital.

The deaths of Kamal Panchal, 62, and Balram Patel, 55, were reported on Friday. “We were stuck in the jam for one and a half hours. During this time my father got nervous, he complained of heaviness and fainted in the car. He was taken to a private hospital in Dewas, where doctors declared him dead," said Kamal’s son Vijay Panchal.

Meanwhile, Indore collector Asheesh Singh directed officials from NHAI, IMC, Traffic Police, and PWD to ensure uninterrupted traffic movement. The traffic jam incited criticism from the opposition Congress.

“There has been a huge traffic jam on the bypass for several days. Three people have died. Action should be taken against the administrative officers and police for failing to maintain traffic," said Congress spokesperson Amit Chaurasia.
