Three sitting judges and two retired judges of the Madras High Court, along with hundreds of other passengers of Yercaud Express travelling between Erode and Chennai, had a miraculous escape on Tuesday (June 17, 2025) night following a possible derailment attempt after the train crossed Sankagiri.
According to court sources, Justices N. Sathish Kumar, G.K. Ilanthiraiyan and Krishnan Ramasamy and former judges K. Kalyanasundaram and M. Govindaraj had boarded the train at around 9 pm on Tuesday after offering condolences on the death of senior advocate V.K. Muthusamy, also the father of Justice M.M. Sundresh of the Supreme Court.
Within half an hour of the journey, the train engine ran over an iron piece of rail track that had been placed across the tracks. The loco pilot immediately pulled the brakes thereby averting a major mishap that they may have occurred if the coaches too had run over the obstacle.
Thereafter, the engine of the train alone was replaced and the passengers were safely brought to Chennai on Wednesday morning after a delay of about three hours.
