Three Pharma students from Karnataka drown in Kannur

Three pharma students from Karnataka drowned while swimming on Payyambalam Beach here on Sunday morning.

The deceased have been identified as Mohammed Afnan Ahmed, Mohammad Rehanuddin and Afras Mohammed. All were DPharma students pursuing their internship.

According to the police, the students had gone for a swim early in the morning when one of them was swept away. His two friends attempted to rescue him, but they too were driven away by the strong currents.

Local residents said the group had entered the water in a part of the beach not typically used for swimming due to strong undercurrents. Rescue operations were launched immediately but the trio could not be saved.

The bodies were later recovered with the help of lifeguards and local fishermen. The Kannur police have registered a case and further investigation is under way.
