Thrissur General Hospital’s Cardiology department has marked a major milestone in cardiac care by successfully performing a rare heart procedure known as an ‘Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) Device Closure’ on a 48-year-old woman. This procedure involves closing a congenital hole in the heart using a specialised device and is accomplished using a minimally invasive keyhole surgery technique.
This complex operation stands out as a unique achievement among the more than 3,500 cardiac surgeries completed since the launch of the hospital’s cathlab on April 20, 2022.
The surgery was led by consultant cardiologists A. Krishnakumar and Vivek Thomas, with the support of a dedicated team. Their combined effort and skill were crucial to the operation’s success.
Dr. Krishnakumar said that this success reflects the strength of Kerala’s public healthcare system. He highlighted that with dedication and teamwork, even advanced medical procedures can be effectively carried out in the public sector.
Thrissur Corporation Mayor M.K. Varghese praised the medical team, calling the successful surgery a shining example of how government hospitals can deliver world-class treatment to the public.
