RAIPUR: The tiger population in Chhattisgarh has doubled over the past three years, climbing from 17 in 2022 to 35 in the latest April 2025 survey, officials said during the 15th meeting of the state wildlife welfare board chaired by chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai on Tuesday.Member secretary Arun Kumar Pandey, PCCF (wildlife), presented departmental achievements, stating that the highest number of tigers are now found in the Achanakmar Tiger Reserve. He shared that the National Tiger Conservation Authority has approved translocation of tigers from Madhya Pradesh to Udanti-Sitanadi and Guru Ghasidas Tamor Pingla reserves, with the process to begin soon.Facilities in tiger reserves and Kanger Valley National Park are being expanded to attract more visitors, providing livelihood to local communities while reinforcing conservation.Expressing satisfaction at the growth in tiger numbers, CM Sai said the figures reflect the success of conservation measures.“Chhattisgarh is rich in forest wealth and wildlife. Conservation and promotion of biodiversity is our priority. This increase in tiger numbers is evidence of our efforts, and now we must extend similar focus to other species,” he said.He highlighted Neemgaon in Jashpur, known for attracting migratory birds, as a potential conservation site that could also boost tourism and employment.

Forest and climate change minister Kedar Kashyap, who is also the board’s vice-chairman, said habitats for various species were showing positive signs of recovery.“The proposals passed in the meeting are in the interest of both people and nature. They will strengthen biodiversity and ensure a peaceful environment,” he noted.Special measures are also being taken for the state bird, the Hill Myna, including a “Myna Mitra” volunteer group to monitor its habitat. The board approved several proposals including construction of patrolling routes, rationalizing protected areas, a road project from Dhawalpur to Kukrar in Udanti-Sitanadi, pipeline extension under Mission Amrit Yojana, and laying of optical fiber cables in Kabirdham forests.Officials said these steps would help digital access, government payments, and better communication for forest staff, while aiding local villagers’ socio-economic growth.
