Panaji: Villagers living downstream of the Tillari river were put on alert late Tuesday evening after the water level of the reservoir inched towards the danger level. Officials said there is no need to panic and that the alert is only precautionary.
They said that the water level was at 40m, 3m below the danger mark.Officials in Maharashtra said they are monitoring the situation closely.“Water from the dam has been released at 250 litres per second. There is no need to panic. The water at the Tillari reservoir only reached the danger level in the year 2019, leading to flooding downstream. Such a situation has not occurred during any other year. Villagers have been told not to venture near the banks as of now,” said an official.Very heavy rain of 150mm was recorded over 24 hours the previous day in Dodamarg, as per the rain gauge installed near the reservoir. However, the figures for Tuesday will only be out a day later.“It takes four hours of intense rain for the water levels to cover 3m to reach the danger mark,” officials said. The Tillari reservoir is 90% full at present.
