Tiny theatre showcases big drama in Los Angeles

MeRo invited a few Arts District OGs to headline a soft opening of Electrical Box Theatre

On a busy corner in Los Angeles, a drab utility box has pulled off the ultimate glow-up. Dubbed the ‘Electrical Box Theatre’, this pint-sized stage tucked into a standard street cabinet is turning an overlooked piece of infrastructure into the city’s most unexpected performance venue.

Installed in Downtown LA, the miniature theatre is the latest creation of street artist SC MeRo.Small stage, big performancesThe concept is simple: anyone can step up to sing, recite poetry, stage a sketch, dance, host an open mic or even lead a walking tour — inside the box or just outside it. Sharing pictures on social media, MeRo wrote, “This project has been on the backburner of my mind for what seemed like forever.

So, it’s such a relief to finally see it come to fruition.”A theatre behind combination locksFrom outside, the box blends seamlessly into the urban grit with its faux-concrete base and nondescript metal shell. But spin the combination locks and the magic happens. Doors reveal red velvet-lined walls inspired by the early 20th-century movie palaces of Broadway. Inside are framed paintings of electrical boxes, a clock and a gold mirror — tiny details that transform the cramped space into a jewel-box theatre.
