Tiruchi Corporation is set to improve access to specialised healthcare services by expanding polyclinics to two additional urban primary health centres (UPHC) in the city.
At present, polyclinics are available at UPHCs located on East Boulevard Road, Kattur, Subramaniyapuram, Woraiyur, and Edamalaipattipudur, which covers peripheral and core parts of Tiruchi.
Specialists from various disciplines, including general medicine, obstetrics, and gynaecology, paediatrics, ophthalmology, physiotherapy, dermatology, dental, and psychiatry, available in these clinics from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. daily for six days a week. Around three or five doctors are engaged in each speciality at each clinic.
On an average, specialists in each polyclinic treat around 45 patients for obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatric care, and general medicine, while the number touches 20 for dental problems, psychiatry, and physiotherapy every day. In April, about 2,128 people have availed of the services at the polyclinics.
As the existing polyclinics are getting good patronage, the civic body has decided to expand the services to UPHCs at Kamaraj Nagar and Thiruvanaikoil. In addition to the specialised services, steps have been taken to establish radiology at the polyclinics to benefit people.
“Since scanning equipment is available at all centres, we are planning to rope in radiologists at these centres to scan patients, especially pregnant women,” said M. Vijay Chandran, City Health Officer.
Polyclinics are available in densely populated areas of the city for the benefit of underprivileged backgrounds. Officials said that patients referred from other UPHCs can avail of the speciality consultations at the polyclinics instead of visiting the Tiruchi GH. “As polyclinics offer a wide range of medical facilities under one roof, it reduces the need for patients to visit multiple locations and enables regular follow-up for the patients,” he added.
