Tiruchi Corporation has planned to use liquid chlorination at overhead water tanks to ensure proper water quality and prevent discolouration.

According to sources, the city has 147 overhead water tanks to store drinking water pumped from various sources.

Officials said that when chlorine powder was added to the water tank, the chlorine level remained unstable throughout the day, leading to complaints from residents about the poor quality of water. As a solution, the civic body planned to use liquid chlorination at all overhead tanks to help maintain the required chlorine level. The spot chlorination system, which exists at 20 places, will be installed at all overhead tanks to prevent lapses in chlorinating the water.

Under the system, an electric motor pump automatically adds chlorinated water at the time of refilling the tank. At present, operators chlorinate overhead water tanks, in addition to major collector wells on the Cauvery and the Kollidam.

Recently, the drinking water supply was disrupted on a few streets in Sethuraman Pillai Colony and Sangiliyandapuram. However, when roads were dug up to check the issue, plastics, paper, balls, and sacks were found clogging the flow of water. It is said that when chlorine powder is added, the sacks and paper are left behind in the tank, causing clogging in pipelines. To avert this, the civic body has planned to set up a scaver valve system at all the overhead water tanks. An estimate is being prepared to take up the work.

New tanks

Meanwhile, the civic body has taken steps to construct 10 water tanks with a capacity of five lakh litres each at an estimate of ₹20.31 crore. Tenders are to be floated for water tanks at Khajamalai, Senthaneerpuram, State Bank Colony, and Rajarajan Nagar.

In the next phase, overhead tanks will be constructed at Pari Nagar, Pasumai Nagar, Lorry Shed at Madurai Road, Vasanth Nagar, Palaniappa Nagar, and Iruthayapuram Thoppu Street, the official added.
