“Touch me and you’ll be found in 35 pieces. I belong to Aman," warned Sitara as she sat silently in one corner of the room, holding a sharp knife under the veil. These were the first words Captain Nishad heard from his newlywed bride on their wedding night in Prayagraj—a horrifying start to what was supposed to be the beginning of a lifelong companionship.
The 26-year-old groom from the ADA Colony area of Prayagraj was left shaken after his bride, Sitara, whom he had married just a day before, threatened to chop him into 35 pieces. And what followed were three terrifying nights, filled with threats, fear, and humiliation—ending in a dramatic midnight escape.
A marriage that never was
Captain Nishad was married to Sitara, daughter of Lakshmi Narayan Nishad from Karachhana Deeha village, on April 29. The bride arrived at her in-laws’ house on April 30, and a grand reception was held on May 2. Unbeknownst to the guests and relatives enjoying the celebrations, inside the couple’s room, a horror story had begun to unfold.
“When I entered the room, she was sitting quietly, completely veiled, and holding a knife," Nishad recounted. “She told me bluntly—’Don’t touch me. I’m Aman’s property. If you try, I’ll cut you into 35 pieces.’ I was frozen. That entire night, I sat on the sofa while she stayed on the bed with the knife. I didn’t dare sleep."
Nishad said this went on for three nights. “She would sleep only after midnight. I stayed awake, fearing she might stab me in my sleep. I’ve read about such cases in newspapers. I thought I might become another headline."
‘Send me to Aman’
On May 3, unable to bear the mental pressure, Nishad shared everything with his mother. Chaos erupted in the household when Sitara was confronted. To everyone’s shock, she admitted without hesitation, “I love Aman. I only married because I was forced to. I want to live with him—only he has the right to spend a wedding night with me."
According to Ram Asare Nishad, the groom’s father, the family immediately called Sitara’s parents and informed them of the situation. A formal meeting between both families was held on May 25 in the presence of local elders. “She was told to forget Aman and accept her marriage," said Ram Asare. He said that they even brought in neighbours to mediate. A written compromise was prepared where she agreed to stay with their son.
But despite the agreement, Sitara reportedly continued harassing her husband in private, rejecting the marriage and repeatedly asking to be sent to Aman, whom she loved.
Midnight escape
On the night of May 30, Sitara eventually escaped. With the main gate locked, she allegedly scaled a rear boundary wall and fled from the house. CCTV footage later captured her limping away around midnight.
“No one saw it coming. She didn’t have the key to the gate, so she climbed the wall," said Ram Asare. “She ran straight into the arms of Aman. Now we are left dealing with shame, police rounds, and endless questions from society."
Nishad’s sister Poonam said the family only realised something was wrong when her brother appeared unusually distressed after the wedding. “We thought he was just adjusting to married life. But then Sitara told us directly, ‘I love Aman, and I will only be with him’. She called Aman in front of us and told him to come get her. She even showed me her chats with him. Aman said he would kill my brother if needed. We were terrified."
Captain Nishad’s mother, Shanti Devi, said she lived in constant fear during those weeks. “She threatened to harm herself or my son. We were scared she’d do something drastic and we’d be blamed. Thank God she ran away—at least now she’s safe, and so is my son."
Sitara’s father, Lakshmi Narayan Nishad, was distraught. “I don’t want to speak much. I searched hard for a good match for her. We tried to make her understand. She didn’t listen. What has she left us with? Just shame and pain. We had to involve the police, do community meetings… nothing worked."
No FIR, mutual settlement signed
According to Inspector Kishore Gautam of Naini Bridge Police Station, the matter came to the station as a non-criminal family dispute. “The boy’s family submitted an application and requested that no FIR be filed. Both families agreed to resolve the matter through discussion. They presented a written mutual agreement. Since it was a domestic matter, we respected their decision," he said.
Now emotionally and mentally scarred, Captain Nishad is trying to move forward. “If I ever marry again, it will be someone who truly understands the meaning of marriage. Sitara never accepted me. She only wanted Aman. I feared for my life every night."
He added, “If she returns, I don’t think I’ll be able to live with her again. That fear still hasn’t gone away."
