Traffic on Belagavi-Goa Road via Chorla resumed on Monday night. Authorities earlier closed the road following landslips amid heavy rainfall in the region.

A portion of the Kusamalli Bridge on the Malaprabha near Jamboti cracked and the National Highway Authority of India officials stopped traffic. Vehicles were diverted through the Bailur Cross-Bailur-Habbanahatti-Jamboti Road and the Khanapura-Ramanagar-Anmod Road.

Another reason was the excess flow of water in the Malaprabha following the opening of some gates in an upstream barrage. However, following reduction in water flow, reduced rainfall and urgent repairs on the road the road was opened for traffic.

Officers created a temporary road next to the new bridge by installing pipes in the river to facilitate vehicle traffic.

Deputy Commissioner Mohammed Roshan earlier instructed officers to speed up work to lay a concrete slab on the bridge so that work on the main bridge can be completed on time and the road opened for traffic.

A British era bridge at Kusamalli was demolished in January and work on a new bridge began.

“The new bridge is ready and the new slab on the bridge is being cured. We hope to open the new bridge in two weeks,” an officer said.
