Chiefs have until July 15 to secure Trey Smith’s future (Image via: Getty Images)
Trey Smith has anchored the Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive line since 2021, playing a crucial role in protecting superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes. As the July 15 contract deadline nears, the pressure is building on the Chiefs to secure their dominant right guard long-term or risk losing a key piece of their Super Bowl-winning core in 2025 free agency.
Why Trey Smith extension matters more than ever
Drafted in the sixth round due to medical red flags, Smith quickly outperformed his draft slot. Since his rookie season, he’s started every game, helped lead the Chiefs to three Super Bowls, and won two. In 2024, he logged 1,115 snaps, allowed zero sacks, and earned an elite 80.8 run-blocking grade, ranking him among the top 10 guards in the NFL.Patrick Mahomes has taken notice. Smith’s consistency in pass protection and physical dominance in the run game make him one of the most trusted names in the Chiefs’ locker room.
Simply put, when Mahomes steps into a clean pocket, Trey Smith is often the reason why.
Smith signed a $23.4 million franchise tag in March. But without a multi-year deal by July 15 at 4 PM ET, he’ll play 2024 on the tag and hit free agency next March. For Kansas City, that could be a dangerous gamble.Top guards in the NFL now command up to $21 million per year and over $60 million in guarantees. Smith’s camp knows it. The Chiefs do too.
Letting him hit the open market could invite massive offers from teams desperate for elite offensive line help.Losing Trey Smith would not only weaken Kansas City’s interior line but also put added pressure on Mahomes, who was sacked a career-high 36 times last season, including six in the Super Bowl. Also Read: Hallie Aiono drops ‘6 Months’ baby bump photo after slapping Puka Nacua with court papersTrey Smith is just 26 and entering his prime.
