A trough running across Tamil Nadu will bring heavy rain over the southern and interior parts of the State for two days. While Northeast monsoon is yet to revive its vigorous phase, northern parts will continue to receive thunderstorms for a few days.
The Regional Meteorological Centre has forecast scattered rainfall to continue till mid-November and south T.N. would receive more rainfall after Sunday compared to rest of the State.
The trough, that runs from central Bay of Bengal to south Kerala across Tamil Nadu, will influence heavy rainfall for two days. While Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Theni and Dindigul districts are likely to receive heavy rain on Friday, intense downpour may shift to Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi and Thoothukudi districts on November 8.
Though the State has been experiencing wet spells, it has been missing out on widespread intense rainfall post cyclone Montha. Clear skies and dry weather led to hot day temperature in several parts. On Thursday, Madurai Airport recorded 35 degree Celsius, the hottest temperature for the day in the State.
The Meteorological Department has noted that light to moderate rainfall would occur in some parts of T.N. under the influence of easterly/northeasterly winds.
B. Amudha, Head (Additional in-charge), RMC, said such sporadic thunderstorm activity, which is lashing some places in north T.N., is common during dry spells of Northeast monsoon. Such rainfall patterns would continue for a few more days.
The weather models do not indicate any probability of cyclogenesis until November 15, she said.
During the past 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Thursday, Thirupuvanam in Sivagangai district received 12 cm, heaviest rainfall in T.N. on the day. Places in Thanjavur, Ariyalur, Tiruvallur and Tiruvannamalai district also received heavy rainfall.
Several places, particularly in north T.N., including Ranipet, Vellore, Chengalpattu and Chennai, received light to moderate rainfall till 6 p.m. on Thursday. The RMC has predicted one or two spells of light/moderate rainfall to occur in some areas on Friday.
