US President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced that he would be meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping during his trip to the South Asia next week. He, however, said that the meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin has been cancelled.
“Next week, we’ll be going to Malaysia, South Korea, and Japan. In South Korea, I’ll be meeting with President Xi of China. We’ll have a pretty long meeting scheduled. We can work out a lot of our questions and our doubts and our tremendous assets together… We cancelled the meeting with President Putin. It didn’t feel right to me. It didn’t feel like we were going to get to the place we have to get, so I cancelled it," Trump told reporters.
Speaking on the latest sanctions against Russia, Trump said that after the ceasefire deal in the Middle East, Ukraine-Russia war will soon end.
“I just felt it was time. We’ve waited a long time. I thought that we’d go long before the Middle East. We did the Middle East plus seven," he said.
Hours earlier, Trump imposed sanctions on Russia’s two largest oil companies for funding “Kremlin’s war machine".
According to a statement by the Treasury Department, the sanctions have been imposed on Russia’s two largest oil companies, Open Joint Stock Company Rosneft Oil Company (Rosneft) and Lukoil OAO (Lukoil).
The department further stated that the US will continue to advocate for a peaceful resolution to the war, and a permanent peace depends entirely on Russia’s willingness to negotiate in good faith.
The President on Wednesday once again claimed to have ended the recent war between India and Pakistan.
Since May 2025, Trump has repeatedly claimed more than 40 times across speeches, interviews, and social media of mediating the India-Pakistan ceasefire.
The US President’s comments refer to India’s Operation Sindoor, which involved precision strikes on nine terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) after the Pahalgam terror attack on 22 April, which killed 26 civilians. According to Trump, his intervention, including the threat of crippling tariffs, led both countries to step back from conflict within 24 hours.
