US President Donald Trump has asked the Supreme Court to review the $5 million civil case wherein he was found guilty of sexually abusing and defaming magazine columnist E Jean Carroll.

In 2024, a Manhattan federal jury found that Trump had sexually abused Carroll in a luxury department store dressing room in the spring of 1996 and awarded her $5 million for battery and defamation.

According to CNN, Carroll alleged Trump raped her in the Bergdorf Goodman department store and then defamed her when he denied her claim, said she wasn’t his type and suggested she made up the story to boost sales of her book. Trump denied all wrongdoing.

The President has claimed Judge Lewis Kaplan, who oversaw the civil trial, made several errors by allowing the jury to hear testimony from two women who claimed he had sexually assaulted them years ago.

His lawyers said the judge should not have let the jurors watch “Access Hollywood tape," which showed Trump in 2005 saying he gropes and kisses women.

In an appeal filed on Monday, Trump said: “There were no eyewitnesses, no video evidence, and no police report or investigation. Instead, Carroll waited more than 20 years to falsely accuse Donald Trump, who she politically opposes, until after he became the 45th president, when she could maximize political injury to him and profit for herself."

According to CNN, the Justice Department has filed an amicus brief supporting review of whether presidential immunity can be waived “from civil damages liability predicated on official acts."

However, the Supreme Court is yet to take up the case.
