United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday cancelled plans to sign a major bipartisan housing bill, saying he would not move forward until Congress passes the SAVE America Act, a sweeping election reform proposal that has become a key priority of his administration.

Just hours before heading to Capitol Hill for a meeting with Republican senators, Trump announced the decision in a post on Truth Social.

“Today’s Housing News Conference and Signing is hereby cancelled until such time as we pass the desperately needed SAVE AMERICA ACT, which I consider to be a National Emergency," Trump wrote.

It remains unclear whether Trump intends to sign the housing bill at a later date or veto it altogether. He also did not mention the legislation while speaking briefly to reporters after meeting Republican senators on Capitol Hill.

The housing bill, which cleared both the House and Senate with overwhelming bipartisan support earlier this week, is aimed at addressing the affordability crisis by encouraging the construction of more homes and limiting large investment firms from purchasing single-family houses.

Republicans had hoped to campaign on the legislation ahead of the fall elections as voters continue to rank the cost of living among their top concerns.

However, before cancelling the signing ceremony, Trump dismissed the measure in another Truth Social post, calling it “of minor importance" before pivoting back to the SAVE America Act.

The SAVE America Act seeks to overhaul elections in all 50 states and add new proof of citizenship and voter ID requirements for voters.

Despite broad Republican support, Senate leaders have acknowledged they currently lack the votes needed to pass the legislation because of united Democratic opposition and the Senate’s 60-vote filibuster threshold.

Trump’s decision has added fresh strain between the White House and Senate Republicans, particularly after the housing bill was widely viewed as one of the party’s most significant bipartisan legislative achievements.

Earlier in the day, Trump attended the Senate Republicans’ weekly lunch at the invitation of Senator Rick Scott, where he discussed the SAVE America Act and other issues with GOP lawmakers.

Following the meeting, Trump told reporters that the party is “unified". “We’re very proud of the party. We like our leader, we like everybody really in the room. I don’t like a few people, but that’s okay," Trump said.

The SAVE America Act is designed to curb noncitizen voting in US elections, despite such voting being rare and already prohibited in federal elections, while introducing nationwide voter ID requirements.

The House passed the legislation in February, and it enjoys broad support among Republicans. However, without Democratic backing, the GOP remains well short of the 60 votes required to overcome the Senate filibuster and secure its passage.
