US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he remained “disappointed" with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin for not ending its war with Ukraine.

“I am very disappointed because Vladimir Putin and I had a very good relationship. Probably still do. I don’t know why he continues with this war. This war has been so bad for him," he said.

He further said: “He’s going into four years of a war that he should have won in one week…He has lost a million and a half soldiers, probably, close…It’s a horrible war. It is the biggest thing that’s happened since World War II in terms of death. It’s bigger than any of them. I settled eight of them. The biggest is that in terms of death. I think India and Pakistan had great potential, too. We did a great job in that one. But he’s got to really settle this war…"

The President said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will visit Washington on Friday.

“I know what he has to say. He wants weapons. He would like to have Tomahawks," he added.

On Sunday, Trump had announced that he would send Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine if the war with Russia is not settled.

Tomahawk cruise missiles have a range of 2,500 kilometres. This means that if a missile is launched from Ukraine, it would be able to reach the Kremlin and all of European Russia.

Previously, President Vladimir Putin warned the US against supplying Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine for long-range strikes deep into Russia.

After his successful mediation of the Gaza peace deal, US President Donald Trump has turned his attention to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, saying he plans to broker a peace agreement between the two countries.

Addressing the Israeli Knesset in Jerusalem, Trump told US Envoy Steve Witkoff, “If you don’t mind, we need to first get the Russia deal done. We’ve got to get it done. We will get it done."

He added that while it would also be great to work on a peace deal with Iran, the priority is Russia. “If you don’t mind, Steve, let’s focus on Russia. We’ll take care of it," he said.

Trump has a history of attempting to mediate the Russia-Ukraine conflict, including efforts at the 2025 London Summit, where leaders discussed possible solutions, and a high-level US-Russia summit in Saudi Arabia in February 2025, aimed at restarting talks after years of stalled diplomacy.

The Russia–United States Summit, held on August 15 at Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson in Alaska, also brought together Trump and President Vladimir Putin to discuss the ongoing Russia-Ukraine War.

The Ukraine war, which began with Russia’s invasion in February 2022, remains ongoing, but Trump expressed optimism, saying he believes the conflict can be resolved.
