US President Donald Trump has suggested that his administration may impose a 100% tariff on all imported semiconductors and chips, signalling a major shift in trade policy aimed at bolstering domestic manufacturing. Speaking to reporters during a meeting with Apple CEO Tim Cook in the Oval Office, Trump announced the potential tariffs.

“So 100% tariff on all chips and semiconductors coming into the US. But if you’ve made a commitment to build (in the US), or if you’re in the process of building (in the US), as many are, there is no tariff," the President said.

The move is intended to pressure global tech firms to establish or expand their manufacturing facilities within the US, reducing reliance on foreign supply chains. Trump noted that companies like Apple would benefit from the exemption, given their increasing focus on domestic production.

“But the good news for companies like Apple is if you’re building in the US or have committed to build, without question, committed to build in the US, there will be no charge," Trump added.

As of now, there has been no official timeline or policy document released regarding the implementation of the proposed tariff. White House officials have yet to clarify the scope or mechanisms for enforcement.

If implemented, the policy could have wide-ranging effects on industries that rely heavily on semiconductors, such as consumer electronics, automotive manufacturing, artificial intelligence systems, and health technology. The tariff could prompt multinational companies to reevaluate their supply chains and possibly invest in domestic production to avoid the additional costs.

Meanwhile, Apple has announced plans to invest $100 million in US manufacturing. The move comes amid growing pressure from the Trump administration to shift iPhone and other product assembly operations from overseas facilities to the US.
