Hours after imposing an additional 25% tariff on Indian imports, US President Donald Trump has warned of potential secondary sanctions, escalating tensions in global trade. The warning came during a press interaction on Wednesday, ANI reported. Trump also signalled that China could face similar tariffs or sanctions over its ongoing trade relationship with Russia.
The President’s remarks were in response to questions regarding why India was specifically targeted for the new tariff measures. Indian officials have previously pointed out that several countries continue to import Russian oil. Addressing the media, Trump stated, “It’s only been eight hours. So let’s see what happens. You’re going to see a lot more. You’re going to see so many secondary sanctions."

When asked whether China could face similar penalties for its trade in Russian oil, Trump hinted that such action is under consideration, saying, “Could happen. Depends on how we do. Could happen."
Earlier on Wednesday, President Trump announced an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods, effectively doubling the existing rate to 50%. The revised duties are set to take effect on August 27, three weeks after the official signing of the order.
Trump’s decision arrives at a delicate moment in global diplomacy, as the US continues to pressure countries to reduce economic ties with Russia. The administration has been leveraging economic tools such as sanctions and tariffs as part of its strategy to isolate Moscow and accelerate ceasefire negotiations.
When asked whether a relaxation on tariffs on India would be reconsidered if a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine is reached, Trump replied that any rollback would be assessed later.
Meanwhile, following a recent meeting between US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Russian President Vladimir Putin, speculation has intensified around a possible in-person meeting between Trump and Putin, which could take place as early as next week. While unconfirmed, such a meeting could mark a significant development in the path toward ending the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
