US President Donald Trump had repeatedly claimed that the United States and Iran were close to a deal to end the war that has roiled global energy markets for the last three months, yet the fragile ceasefire was shattered by renewed missile strikes between Iran and Israel, dealing a potential blow to ongoing negotiations.

The Gulf region woke up to a dramatic escalation in tensions as Israel and Iran launched tit-for-tat strikes in recent hours. Iran said its attack was in retaliation for an Israeli strike on Beirut’s southern suburbs, despite Trump warning Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu against any retaliation.

Furthermore, Trump also told Netanyahu in a phone call on Sunday to hold off on launching a retaliatory attack on Iran and escalating an already tense situation in the region. However, Israel went ahead with attacks on multiple targets in Iran, raising questions about Trump’s ability to influence Israeli decision-making at a critical juncture.

Trump ‘Humiliated’ By Israel?

Israel’s retaliatory attack on Iran prompted criticism over Trump’s handling of the situation. Democratic US Senator from Connecticut, Chris Murphy, said Trump was being “humiliated" by Netanyahu.

“This war has been humiliating for Trump and American power generally. And when Trump announces he is going to call Netanyahu and tell him not to retaliate, and within hours Netanyahu retaliates, the humiliation just compounds," he said on X.

Senate Democrat Leader Chuck Schumer also criticised Trump’s Iran policy, saying his party had given Republicans a chance to end the “illegal war" eight times. House Leader Hakeem Jeffries also called on the Republican-controlled Senate to move the war powers resolution aimed at halting the conflict that is deeply unpopular with Americans.

How Trump Tried To Prevent Escalation

The 79-year-old US president has sought to end the war, which has completed 100 days on Monday, amid soaring gas prices and declining popularity ratings, but a deal has remained elusive. Iranian officials have repeatedly warned that any peace arrangement with the United States would require a ceasefire “on all fronts", including Lebanon and Gaza.

However, Israel has intensified operations against Hezbollah targets, including strikes around Beirut and in southern areas, resulting in thousands of casualties. Trump responded directly, urging Netanyahu to avoid actions that could derail diplomacy with Tehran.

A tense exchange between Trump and Netanyahu was reported last week, during which the US president called the latter “f***ing crazy" for escalating the offensive against Lebanon. “You’d be in prison if it weren’t for me. I’m saving your a**. Everybody hates you now. Everybody hates Israel because of this," he was quoted by Axios as saying.

Does Trump Call The Shots?

Despite Trump’s warning, Israel launched strikes in the Beirut area for the first time since the US announced a truce plan for Lebanon last week, killing two people. Iran fired salvos of missiles in retaliation, putting the US-Iran peace talks in jeopardy.

Trump has tried to project a sense of command by saying that the renewed strikes won’t affect the peace talks, adding that Netanyahu “doesn’t call the shots."

“It’s not going to have any impact on the dealI call the shots. I call all the shots. He (Netanyahu) doesn’t call the shots. He won’t have any choice," he told Financial Times. In a separate call with Axios, Trump said, “Each of them had their fun. Israel had its strike, and Iran had its strike. We don’t need another one."

However, it is unclear if Netanyahu would listen to Trump’s call for restraint. Israeli military spokesperson Effie Defrin said Israel will “intensify" its strikes on Hezbollah in response to the Iranian missile attack, CNN reported.
