The United States wants to deepen cooperation with India in artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said on Wednesday as the two countries reviewed progress on an interim trade deal.
Greer also said Washington sees significant opportunities to collaborate with India in artificial intelligence, emerging technologies and future trade sectors as both countries push to conclude an interim trade agreement before a key tariff deadline next month.
Speaking after two days of talks with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said India and the US are looking to “move forward in AI" and collaborate on the technologies and trade architectures of the future, while also advancing an interim bilateral trade agreement ahead of a key tariff deadline next month.
“India has a long history of agriculture and manufacturing, but we also know that they are moving forward in technology. They want to move forward in AI. They want to cooperate and collaborate with the United States on the technologies of the future and trade of the future," Greer said.
His remarks came as New Delhi and Washington concluded a ministerial review of negotiations on the first phase of a proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), discussing market access, digital trade, supply-chain resilience, non-tariff barriers and cooperation in strategic sectors.

The Commerce Ministry said the two sides undertook a “comprehensive review" of the proposed pact and discussed pathways to conclude an interim agreement, describing the progress made so far as substantial.
Greer’s visit assumes significance as both countries race against time to finalise an interim arrangement before July 24, when a temporary 10 per cent US tariff regime is scheduled to expire.
The US trade chief also revealed that trade was among the issues discussed when Prime Minister Narendra Modi met US President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France, last week.
“President Trump and Prime Minister Modi have an amazing relationship. Just last week, they met at G7 in Evian, France, and I was there. They agreed to take the relationship to the next level. This includes the trade deal that we’re working on, but it includes every aspect of the relationship," Greer said.
The latest ministerial engagement follows chief negotiator-level discussions held in New Delhi earlier this month and comes amid efforts by both governments to recalibrate an earlier framework agreement after changes in the US tariff regime altered the assumptions on which the original deal was built.
