US President Donald Trump, during his visit to Japan, once again reiterated his claim that he was responsible for ending the conflict between India and Pakistan, attributing the breakthrough to his use of tariffs as a diplomatic tool.

“A lot of the wars that I stopped were because of tariffs. And, frankly, I did a great service to the world, but because of tariffs, because of trade," Donald Trump said.

The US President added, “If you look at India and Pakistan, they were going at it. Seven planes were shot down. Seven brand-new, beautiful planes were shot down, and they were going at it, two big nuclear powers. To Prime Minister Modi and the Field Marshal over in Pakistan, I said that we’re not going to do any trade if you’re going to be fighting."

Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed that he helped secure a “full and immediate" ceasefire between the nuclear-armed neighbours, after what he describes as US-mediated talks. Earlier this month, he had said his tariff threats were the real reason behind peace efforts, adding that he would not have been able to “solve" eight global conflicts without them.

The US President has also said he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in stopping the India-Pakistan war, arguing that his efforts prevented a potential large-scale conflict between the two countries.

India has consistently rejected Donald Trump’s claims, asserting that the decision to de-escalate tensions with Pakistan was reached through direct diplomatic engagement between the two nations, with no third-party involvement.
