The Senate hearing for US President Donald Trump’s pick for surgeon general, Dr Casey Means, has been postponed after she went into labour with her first child, a spokesperson said on Thursday.

According to CNN, Means would have been the first nominee to ever appear virtually before the HELP committee, owing to her pregnancy. The hearing was scheduled two days after her due date.

The next date of the hearing has not yet been announced.

Unlike previous surgeon generals, the 38-year-old Stanford-trained doctor and wellness entrepreneur does not have an active medical license.

According to CNN, Means has always suggested that psychedelics such as psilocybin can be beneficial for mental health, decried broad pesticide use and warned against long-term use of hormonal birth control.

She was one of the leaders of the “Make America Healthy Again (Maha)" movement, which believes pharmaceutical and food companies as corrupt and responsible for a rise in chronic disease.

She had also questioned elements of the childhood vaccination schedule and even urged Americans not use pharmaceutical prescriptions for chronic ailments.

The author of best-selling “Good Energy" and an avatar of the ‘Make American Healthy Again’ movement was nominated by President Trump this May after withdrawing the nomination of Dr. Janette Nesheiwat.

Meanwhile, Dr Jerome Adams, who served under Trump during his first term, said: “We must acknowledge that our current healthcare system is broken and drastic change is needed."

Raising concerns that Means lacked both a medical licence and completed residency training, Adams said: “Yet no one would go to an unlicensed and incompletely trained doctor for a surgery or a C-section."
