US President Donald Trump defended his administration’s decision to impose limits on foreign student admissions, singling out Harvard University for criticism over what he described as “troubling behavior" and “massive" federal funding.
Donald Trump said his administration still welcomes international students- but not those “causing trouble." He said, “We want to have great students here. We just don’t want students who are causing trouble. I want foreign students here."
The remarks come amid mounting controversy over a policy introduced earlier this month that places a cap on the number of foreign students elite universities such as Harvard can admit, as part of a broader push by the Donald Trump administration to limit certain types of immigration and federal support for institutions viewed as politically hostile.
Donald Trump Targets Harvard Again
Donald Trump went on to accuse Harvard of receiving more than $5 billion in federal funds over a short period- a figure he claimed had only recently come to light during a separate legal dispute between the university and the administration.
“Our country has given Harvard $5 billion plus over a short period of time. Nobody knew that. We found that out… in going through the books. That was sort of a Trump thing," he said.
He added that the discovery occurred in the context of litigation unrelated to the student cap, claiming the dispute was rooted in what he described as Harvard’s “very anti-Semitic" actions.
“It’s a very sad case. It’s a case we win. We can’t lose that case because we have the right to make grants. We’re not going to make any grants like that [again]. I don’t think Harvard has been acting very nicely," he said.
