US President Donald Trump said that representatives from Pakistan will visit Washington next week as the South Asian nation seeks to negotiate a deal to avoid steep tariffs on its exports. Pakistan is facing the threat of a 29% tariff on its exports to the United States, following Washington’s announcement last month of broad-based tariff hikes on several trading partners. The increase comes amid concerns over Pakistan’s $3 billion trade surplus with the US.
Speaking to reporters at Joint Base Andrews after disembarking from Air Force One, Donald Trump said, “As you know, we’re very close to making a deal with India," referencing ongoing negotiations with Pakistan’s neighbor and rival. He added, however, that any potential military conflict between the two nuclear-armed nations would derail trade talks.
“I would have no interest in making a deal with either country if they were at war," Donald Trump said, referring to recent clashes between India and Pakistan. The two countries engaged in four days of intense fighting this month- the worst military escalation between the neighbors in decades.
