A political row erupted on Tuesday after BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari launched a scathing attack on the Congress party over senior leader Digvijaya Singh’s remarks defending jailed activist Umar Khalid.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Bhandari wrote, “Congress party is – ‘Tukde Tukde Congress’. It backs key conspirator of Delhi riots and calls them as innocent!"
He went on to accuse the Congress and its ally, the RJD, of repeatedly siding with anti-national elements.
“Congress RJD: Gangster Shahbuddin – poster boy; Terrorist Hafiz Saeed – ‘Ji’; Terrorist Osama Bin Laden – ‘Ji’; Anti-India Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid – ‘innocent’. Rahul Gandhi’s Congress today has become the political front of all those entities who want to weaken unity and integrity of India!" Bhandari stated.

The remarks came after Digvijaya Singh called Umar Khalid “completely innocent" and a “victim of grave injustice" in a Facebook post that has since gone viral.
In his post, Singh wrote, “Umar Khalid is innocent and is facing a grave injustice. He is a PhD scholar and not a traitor by any standards. He should be released immediately." He further alleged, “The BJP and RSS hatch this conspiracy to falsely implicate Muslims. Jai Siya Ram."Khalid, a former JNU PhD scholar, has been jailed for over five years under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case.
His bail plea was recently heard by the Supreme Court.
