Giribala Singh, the mother-in-law of Twisha Sharma, allegedly demanded Rs 2 lakh during the ‘vidai’ ceremony following Twisha’s marriage to Samarth Singh in December. The allegation forms part of the FIR registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation after it took over the investigation from the Bhopal Police.
The CBI has filed a dowry death case and begun its probe after a team reached Bhopal.
According to details of the FIR accessed by NDTV, the agency registered the case under Sections 80(2), 85 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act.
The FIR, dated May 25, 2026, states that Twisha Sharma married Samarth Singh on December 9, 2025. It alleges that she faced mental and physical harassment over dowry demands after the marriage. Samarth Singh and Giribala Singh have both been named as accused.
The complaint further states that Giribala Singh demanded Rs 2 lakh from Twisha’s family at the time of vidai, and that the amount was paid following her insistence.
The CBI is investigating allegations related to dowry death, harassment, conspiracy and other possible offences.
Twisha, 33, was found hanging at her matrimonial home in Bhopal. Her family accused Samarth Singh and former district judge Giribala Singh of dowry harassment and abetment to suicide. The Singh family has denied the allegations and claimed that Twisha suffered from drug addiction.
Samarth Singh, who had allegedly been absconding since Twisha’s death, was arrested last week after evading authorities for 10 days. Amid growing public outrage, the Madhya Pradesh government transferred the case to the CBI.
The postmortem report confirmed “antemortem hanging", hanging while alive. It also noted injury marks on Twisha’s body, believed to have been caused by assault or a heavy object.
Following demands from Twisha’s family, the Madhya Pradesh High Court last week ordered a second autopsy to be conducted by doctors from AIIMS Delhi. The family had alleged lapses in the first autopsy.
The Supreme Court of India took suo motu cognisance of the case on Saturday, citing alleged institutional bias and procedural irregularities. The court observed that both families were approaching the media “unnecessarily".
A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi also urged restraint in media coverage of the case.
