Police say probe into Nitish Katara case convict Sukhdev Pehalwan’s mysterious death will rely on forensic findings as questions swirl over coincidence or conspiracy

The court had freed him. Society had forgotten him. But on a deserted road in Kushinagar, the past caught up again. Sukhdev Yadav—the man who helped kill Nitish Katara in 2002 in the name of “honour"—was killed in a high-speed collision just months after his release from Delhi’s Tihar Jail.
Police have called it a hit-and-run, but for many, the timing feels too precise to be random. Two decades after one of India’s most high-profile “honour killing" cases shocked the nation, the sudden death of one of its convicts has raised uneasy questions—does justice really end when a sentence is served, or does fate have the last word?
The case
The Nitish Katara case remains one of India’s defining commentaries on caste arrogance and the idea of “family honour". In February 2002, Katara—a young business executive and son of a senior bureaucrat—was abducted from a friend’s wedding in Ghaziabad by Vikas Yadav and Vishal Yadav, relatives of former MP DP Yadav. Their motive: Katara’s relationship with Bharti Yadav, Vikas’s sister, which they believed tarnished family prestige. Katara’s charred body was later found on a roadside in Bulandshahr, turning a private feud into a national conversation about women’s freedom and the caste codes still embedded in Indian society.
Sukhdev Yadav, known locally as Pehalwan, was convicted as their aide—the man who allegedly helped transport Katara to his death. In 2016, the Supreme Court upheld a 25-year non-remittable sentence for Vikas and Vishal and a 20-year term for Sukhdev.
However, after serving the full sentence, Sukhdev was ordered released in March 2025, when the apex court reminded prison authorities that “no citizen may be held beyond a fixed term once the punishment is complete".
‘Accidental’ end
According to police, the “accident" occurred near the Turkpatti area of Kushinagar late on October 28, when a speeding Scorpio allegedly rammed into the motorcycle carrying Sukhdev Yadav and two others. The impact threw all three riders off the bike. While Sukhdev died on the spot, the other two were seriously injured.
Personnel from the Turkpatti police station rushed to the site and shifted the injured to the CHC Fazilnagar, from where doctors referred them to the district hospital owing to their critical condition.
Officials said the Scorpio vehicle later hit the road divider and was found abandoned nearby. “The vehicle has been seized. Once we receive a written complaint, an FIR will be registered and further legal action will follow," said Brahmanand Upadhyay, in-charge of the Madhuriya police outpost.
However, local residents maintain that the car didn’t appear to lose control before the collision, prompting speculation that the crash may not have been entirely accidental. Police have so far not arrested the driver, who fled the scene, and the investigation into the hit-and-run case continues.
What did Nitish’s mother say?
On Sukhdev’s death, Neelam Katara, mother of the slain Nitish, said, “I don’t celebrate anyone’s death. But after what happened to my son, I cannot ignore coincidences. If this was an accident, let it be proved transparently. If not, we deserve to know." She has written to the Uttar Pradesh DGP demanding a time-bound probe by an independent team.
A senior police spokesperson in Lucknow said the case is being “handled purely on forensic grounds". However, so far, no evidence of foul play has emerged to suggest whether Sukhdev’s death was a coincidence or a consequence.
Timeline: From murder to mystery
February 17, 2002: Nitish Katara, a 24-year-old business executive, is abducted and murdered after attending a wedding in Ghaziabad.
2002 (Later months): Police investigations link the murder to Vikas Yadav and Vishal Yadav, sons of influential politician D.P. Yadav. Their aide, Sukhdev Pehalwan (Yadav), is also arrested.
2008: Trial court convicts Vikas and Vishal Yadav of murder; Sukhdev Pehalwan found guilty of kidnapping and destruction of evidence.
2014: Delhi High Court upholds the convictions, calling it an “honour killing rooted in social prejudice".
2016: Supreme Court reduces the Yadav cousins’ life term to 25 years without remission; Sukhdev’s sentence remains lower due to lesser role.
2023 (Late): After over 20 years in jail, Sukhdev Yadav is released following completion of his sentence and good conduct remission.
October 28, 2025: Sukhdev Yadav dies in a “road accident" near Turkpatti, Kushinagar, when a Scorpio crashes into his motorcycle. Two companions are injured; the SUV driver flees.
October 30, 2025: Police seize the abandoned Scorpio and begin a forensic investigation; questions arise over whether the crash was accidental or deliberate.
