Differently-abled students Shivani and K. Chandana from Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Valasapalle of Annamayya district bagged coveted medals at the international and national level para-sports.
District Collector Sridhar Chamakuri on Friday evening felicitated the students in recognition of their outstanding achievements.
Shivani, a grade XII student, bagged a record seven gold medals and one silver in the international para-athletics events held in Thailand recently, shining in shot-put and javelin throw. While her classmate Chandana bagged a gold medal at the national level, marking another proud moment for the district.
The duo was imparted training under a joint initiative of the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti and the Aditya Mehta Foundation, which specialised in preparing differently-abled youth for para-sports.
At a felicitation function held at the Collectorate here on Friday evening (June 6), the Collector congratulated the girls for their grit and perseverance. “Shivani and Chandana shone at the international and national level para-sports, despite their physical limitations, which they proved were no barriers to excellence. Their success will surely motivate several students,” he said.
The Collector said that the success stories of people with extraordinary determination mirror the need for inclusive education and structured support patterns. He urged both the government and private educational institutions to provide non-stop support and encouragement to differently-abled students to pursue their skills in sports and games.
