US President Donald Trump on Friday praised China and described his recent talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping as a defining moment in relations between the world’s two largest powers.

After returning from his China visit, Trump said the meetings marked what he called a “G-2" moment between the United States and China.

“It’s the two great countries. I call it the G-2. I think it’ll go down as a very important moment in history," Trump said in an interview with Fox News on Thursday.

Trump on trade with China

Trump said his visit resulted in major trade agreements between Washington and Beijing.

According to him, China agreed to purchase 200 Boeing aircraft immediately, along with a future commitment involving another 750 planes. He also claimed the discussions included measures aimed at supporting the American agriculture sector.

After a brief refuelling halt in Anchorage, Alaska, Trump arrived at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland and again described the visit as highly successful.

“All I can say is that was a great success… We made great deals. We did great trade deals… A lot of things have happened and you’ll be hearing about them — but that was a tremendous success. I think it really was a historic moment," Trump told reporters.

Taiwan remains a central issue

Taiwan emerged as one of the key issues during the talks between Trump and Xi Jinping.

Trump stressed that maintaining good relations with Xi was important and suggested China would avoid aggressive action on Taiwan while he remained president.

“It’s not a takeover. They just don’t want to see this place — we’ll call it a place because nobody knows how to define it — but they don’t want to see it go independent," Trump said, according to Fox News.

“I don’t think they’ll do anything when I’m here. When I’m not here. I think they might, to be honest with you," he added.

Trump also said he wanted tensions to reduce in the region.

“I want them to cool down. I want China to cool down. We’re not looking to have wars, and if you kept it the way it is, I think China’s going to be OK with that," he said.

According to AP, Xi privately warned Trump that disagreements over Taiwan could push both countries towards confrontation or even conflict.

Trump later said he had not yet decided whether the United States would proceed with a major arms sale to Taiwan.

The US has long supported Taiwan’s self-defence capabilities while officially recognising only one Chinese government under Washington’s long-standing diplomatic policy.

Iran and Strait Of Hormuz

Trump also revealed that Iran and the Strait of Hormuz were discussed during the Beijing meetings.

He said Xi indicated that China was willing to help broker an end to the conflict involving Iran and support efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route.

Trump added that he hoped China, which is Iran’s largest trading partner, could use its influence to persuade Tehran towards an agreement acceptable to Washington.

The US President also claimed Xi assured him that China would not provide military equipment to Iran.
